Daddy rich.
For any of you still relying on the XML feed, the blog itself is broken whilst I figure out something. I need a password that no one's getting back to me about. This feels so ghetto.
rfg #58 - Here's a podcast about being free [83.0Mb, 90:36]
Before anything else, make sure you fully absorb Kutiman's Thru You project first, since the first song played in the podcast needs to have not only the visual accompaniment, but if you follow the credits, you can see the original YouTube videos used in every song. Most pundits believe that Kutiman's work is both landmark in sound and how it tackles copyright concerns, but seeing the spare parts that make the pieces work.
I did a hip hop show last September but after collecting a few compilations, including one from Mr. Kent, time was ripe for a return. A few folks were thrown by the Los Incas song, better known to them as a Simon & Garfunkel interpretation, since it was more folky. However, to me, it stands as one of the most leftfield samples used in DJ Shadow's You Can't Go Home Again, which I'll claim as the best song of this decade.
Otherwise, 'twas a solid mix of the humourous and light rap, along with songs to make a few of us feel old. As new things go, the Height cut was primo, especially since Height himself found out I played one of his songs back in episode 36 and emailed me an AIFF of his new single, though I somehow sat on it for a few months.
At first, I thought playing the Car Wash soundtrack would've been a bit hokey, since the film in question was quite gentle. That said, listening to the tracks played closely showed how righteously funky Rose Royce were, along with how many hip hop songs jacked their style. I mean, listen to the Beastie Boys and Shake Your Rump after listening to Car Wash and they lifted from a great well. Then there's that handclapping you hear at every baseball game...incessant.
No Digable Planets, Run DMC, Public Enemy or the Wu-Tang Clan however, so I need to stock up for the next run.
