Amazing thing, amazing thing.

rfg #92 - Legendary dapper moustache [83.6 Mb]

Aside from catching up on some Canadiana, this episode features a tribute to the late drummer Jerry Fuchs [1974-2009] along with a brief glimpse of British composer Laurie Johnson's oeuvre. If you listen carefully, you'll hear the symptoms of man who twelve hours later got hit with the flu.

rfg #93 - I float like a foetus in suspended disbelief [86.6 Mb]

I wasn't sure what to expect with this broadcast, which was devoted to the new genre called glo-fi, chillwave, dreambeat, hypnagogic pop or whatever. I'm actually impressed how it flows together from dreamy and stark to harsh and extraterrestrial. Artists I left out included Memory Tapes, Delorean and Toro Y Moi.

rfg #94 - Final shots from a twenty aught nine [ABRIDGED] [75.1 Mb]

A sorta besta show for 2009. Originally the playlist went over five hours, so any paring down was to cover flow. The score to the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic The Road, written and composed by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis takes on the back third.

One unfortunate accident with the internet connection took down the podcast server for the first ten minutes of the show, cutting off some happy banter with a couple other show hosts and the entirety of the opening cut: Animal Collective's My Girls off their album Merriweather Post Pavilion through Domino. Although somewhat recoverable, I wouldn't be able to host the file anywhere easily and aside from some joking around, you didn't miss much...at least from a long-term perspective. I recalled that it was the fourth night of Hanukkah, and that was about it.

From my notes:

With the glorious arpeggiated hook from Frankie Knuckles' 1987 house hit Your Love, there's Animal Collective with My Girls, one of the best songs from this year's Merriweather Post Pavilion album. Other than breaking out with the album, along with their sold-out tour and an EP that came out a few weeks ago, part of the former Baltimore crew's appeal this year has been their prodigious performance with the Roland 555 sampler, a powerful though notoriously confusing synth that's normally used only in the studio.

Yep. Here be the songs.
